Dominica / Flights

By Sara Macefield

Its small size and mountainous terrain means that Dominica relies on feeder flights from the larger Caribbean islands to bring in international visitors. Its airport is too small to take jumbo jets, but it can handle smaller aircraft that bring in visitors from the main hub islands of Antigua and Puerto Rico, plus the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. The installation of night landing facilities at Melville Hall Airport has improved accessibility significantly, though the airport’s relatively short runway means it can only handle small turbo-prop aircraft. The airstrip at Canefield is the island’s secondary air facility and caters for light courier aircraft, small island hoppers and charters.
