Dominican Republic / Getting There

By Fiona Dunlop

There are multiple options for flights from North America, UK and Europe, by scheduled or charter airlines; see the list below. From anywhere else in the world you need to fly via Madrid, Paris, London, Miami or New York.

From Puerto Rico, apart from regular flights, there is an overnight ferry (see Ferries).

Yachtsmen have a few options for sailing into port. Official entry points are Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata, Luperón, Samaná, La Romana and Punta Cana. A customs fee is applied per person, payable at the customs and immigration office, and this grants 30 days immigration clearance.

The Dominican Republic’s time zone makes it a breeze for visitors from Canada and the USA; as the Dominican Republic is on Atlantic Standard Time, time difference is minimal or even nothing. For continental Europeans, the Dominican Republic is 5 hours behind (6 hours in summer), for the UK, 4 hours (5 hours in summer).
