Saba / Getting There

Saba lies at the north-western tip of the Lesser Antilles island chain – its nearest neighbour is another forgotten Dutch island, St Eustatius, which is set 16 miles (26km) to the south-east. Modern transport connections are such that the only way in and out of Saba is currently via the French-Dutch island of St Martin/St Maarten, 28 miles (45km) to the north. This is well served by international flights, and from here you can reach Saba either on a short flight or by a choice of two ferries. Saba's Juancho E Yrausquin Airport is a charmingly minimalist operation in the north-east corner of the island. Home to the shortest commercial runway in the world, it exploits a rare stretch of flat ground on the Atlantic coast and has a small terminal with a one-window immigration counter, the handy Flight Deck snack bar, and a large red rock outside proudly inscribed with the words “Welcome to the Unspoiled Queen”. A ferry service also operates from St Maarten.
