St Barthélemy / International Flights
St Maarten is the easiest island from which to reach St Barths as it is just 15 miles away and has excellent international connections (from several cities in the USA, plus Paris and Amsterdam in Europe). If your baggage is ticketed straight to St Barths then you do not need to clear Immigration in St Maarten (there is no Customs anyway). Instead go straight to the Departure Lounge via the transit desk. However, passengers whose flights are delayed risk missing their connection as the island’s airstrip closes just after sunset. A less stressful alternative could be to travel to St Maarten via Paris or Amsterdam where passengers are virtually guaranteed to make the hop across to St Barths on the same day. Another option is to travel via Guadeloupe, from where there are direct flights, or possibly via San Juan.
International airlines do not serve St Barth's so fly to St Maarten instead:
USA
American Airlines fly from New York and Miami (American Eagle from San Juan), US Airways from Philadelphia and Charlotte, United Airlines from Chicago, Continental from Newark, Delta Air Lines from Atlanta, Spirit Airlines from Florida and JetBlue from New York.
Canada
Air Canada from Toronto, Air Transat from Toronto and Montreal.
Mainland Europe
Air France, Air Caraïbes and Corsairfly from Paris, and KLM from Amsterdam
From Britain there are currently no flights to St Maarten and so there are two options. The first is to travel via Antigua, to which there are a number of flights a week from London with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. From Antigua, there are a number of onward connections to St Maarten (Winair), but this still leaves the final hop over to St Barths, so if you want to be sure to reach St Barths on the same day then you are advised to charter a small plane direct, see below.
The other option, which might make the whole trip less stressful, is to travel to St Maarten via Paris or Amsterdam, from where you are more or less guaranteed to make the hop over to St Barths on the same day. It can be a very early start from the UK, or you might decide to spend the night before in Paris or Amsterdam.
