Key Features
BARBADOS, set on its own to the east of the Windward Islands in the south-eastern Caribbean, has the greatest depth of tourism in any ‘small’ Caribbean island, with a full range of budget and luxury options. Easily accessible from Europe, the States and Canada, it has a good variety of excellent beaches. It is a busy, developed island with gracious and approachable islanders and a strong island culture. There are excellent hotels, including some of the Caribbean’s best known, ideal for independent travellers as well as some all-inclusives, superb villas. Excellent restaurants and sports, golf, watersports and on-land activities, excellent gardens, some good visible history. Large cruise industry and shopping.

BARBADOS TRAVEL GUIDE: BARBADOS GUIDE, THE DEFINITIVE CARIBBEAN TRAVEL GUIDE FOR BARBADOS

Barbados is like a trusty friend. It is easy to get to know, gracious and friendly, comfortable to be with, lively at times and always comes up with the goods. The island has excellent beaches and places to stay and the climate is good even for the Caribbean. It is also easy to get to and will encourage you to have a good time. All in all, Barbados is a great island for a first time visit to the Caribbean.

Barbados is also many different things to different people of course, but for its size it has more to offer than any other island in the region. The West Coast, along its stretches of sand and equally pretty cliffs, has a string of the Caribbean’s finest hotels and restaurants, and it really does have a regular following of millionaires in the media and business. There are private properties worth tens of millions on this island. The South Coast has a completely different feel, younger and more active, and it is considerably less expensive. Barbados has impressive depth, with good hotels across the price range and well-priced packages.

The island’s relative development means that it may not fit everyone’s idea of a tropical escape. It is pretty crowded along the south and west coasts (although in the cane fields and farmland inland it can be surprisingly quiet and there are some remote, quiet getaways in the east). The island is also more sophisticated than many travellers expect of the Caribbean. But what Barbados sets out to do it does well. It has the exquisite luxury, the ‘scene’ and the activity.

There is depth of other sorts too. The gardens in Barbados, hotel gardens included, are probably the best in the Caribbean. There is excellent windsurfing and kitesurfing, and golf for those who prefer something a little more sedate. Polo is now an attraction and, like cricket, horse racing and the annual motor rally, it can make a lively family day out. The music is fun too. There are excellent calypsonians and bands to be heard in the lively clubs. There is even opera in Barbados from time to time. The island has an extraordinary history, much of which is still visible in the plantation houses and the story of rum. There is an active National Trust.

And if Barbados is a good place to pick for a first-time visit to the Caribbean, then that’s just as well. Like a trusted friend, though, some people find themselves comfortable with it and never want to risk going somewhere else.

Hotels & Resorts
HOTELS in BARBADOS
Barbados has some of the Caribbean’s finest and most famous hotels along its fabled West Coast. In with such a large tourism industry both the west and south coastlines are pretty much built up with hotels. The South Coast hotels tend to have a different feel, in keeping with the area’s generally younger, often livelier atmosphere and are generally less expensive too. There are places to stay beyond these two main areas, but few are of any size.

There is a well trodden path to Barbados, of reliably smart hotels (and many of them quite expensive too) that are regulars in the Caribbean specialist brochures. Beyond this however, there is actually a bit of a shortage of good mid-range accommodation on the island.

Part of the reason for this is that in recent years many of the hotels in Barbados have become ‘all-inclusive’. To an extent all-inclusives have forced prices down, making holidays more available - if it’s the cheapest holiday around that you’re after then there is plenty to choose from – but in many cases the formula has brought a uniformity of product, a loss of character and eventually in the experience too.

The rationale behind Definitive Caribbean is to recommend the hotels and other businesses that give the best service and experience in all price brackets. Only a few of the all-inclusive hotels and then mainly the fairly expensive ones on the West Coast, really manage to reach beyond the limitations of the formula and have their own strong character or style. Perhaps try Colony Club, Tamarind Cove and children’s specialists Crystal Cove and Almond Beach. Although not all the mid-range hotels have become all-inclusive, there are still not many mid-priced places to stay. Another alternative is to try the self-catering accommodation such as the apartments and condominiums.

Barbados also has a number of hotels that specialise in family holidays, an increasing number have full service spas and a couple of the large resorts have golf courses attached.

Small Hotels & Inns
SMALL BARBADOS HOTELS & INNS
Tucked among the large hotels muscling in for beachfront space on Barbados’s crowded coastlines you will find just a few small hotels and inns with unexpected calm and charm. A couple might fairly be described as ‘boutique’. With just a few rooms they are more intimate in atmosphere than the larger hotels. They usually have fewer facilities (watersports and gyms etc), but they tend to be much lower key and make a nice spot to hide away with all the restaurants and activities of the island around you. That said, several are well known for their restaurants, so you can still expect a good, sometimes lively crowd. Most of the best inns and small hotels are along the West Coast of the island, but there are some along the South Coast and even in the East.

Villas
Barbados offers an excellent range of privately owned and fully staffed villas, from simple beach cottages to opulent mansions. Most of the villas on Barbados are on the West Coast or within a few minutes drive of the beaches in the parishes of St James and St Peter, but another feature of Barbadian villa life are the old plantation houses, which give a peaceful country alternative to the relative hustle and bustle of the coast. There are also many villa resorts and small villa developments, which are popular with families or people who wish to mix and make friends.

On Definitive Caribbean we feature a selection of the best Caribbean villas, and the villas on Barbados represent some of the best villas available for rental on the island and in the Caribbean. All the Barbados villas we feature have professional and recommended management services – vital to the ultimate success of your holiday.

Many of the West Coast beachfront Barbados villas are situated between the main road and the beach, and this strip of land is sometimes quite narrow so do expect to hear some road noise although it doesn’t seem to put anyone off renting these hugely popular properties. Of course during the day you are likely to be at the pool or on the beach and at night it is less noticeable when the windows are closed and the air-conditioning is on.

If you book direct, all rental rates are subject to 7.5% VAT. If you book through a tour operator or travel organiser, the quote should include this tax. Unlike hotels, no service charge is levied on villa rentals so you need to budget for tipping your staff, which will be at least a housekeeper/cook but more usually will be a cook, maid, gardener and night watchman. For details of staff, please see the individual property descriptions. The management company will guide you but by way of a couple of examples, a cook would expect to receive at least US$75 a week; a maid/laundress US$50.

Villa Resorts
The definition of a Caribbean Villa Resort or Barbados Villa Resort can be applied to quite a variety of situations from small clusters of villas to a large resort, but the common thread is that a villa resort offers communal facilities - perhaps just a shared swimming pool or a bar/restaurant and at the larger resorts probably a range of sporting or spa facilities. Staying at a 'resort' style villa can also be an excellent way to combine the privacy and freedom of a villa holiday with the services of a hotel and they are particularly popular with families or those that like the idea of meeting new friends on the beach and at the pool or the bar. If this is what you are looking for, here are some examples of Barbados Villa Resorts where you will be able to enjoy the fun of resort style living.

Cottages, Apartments and Condominiums
Barbados has some idyllic small beach villas and houses (see under villas) but these days there is little by way of traditional beach cottages. Couples and small families wanting to sample Barbados villa life tend towards the increasing number of stylish Barbados condominiums on the West Coast which come with a well-trained cook/housekeeper and your laundry is still done for you as part of the deal. A less expensive option is to go for the South Coast of Barbados, which has many apartments and, more recently, a number of condominium developments.

Guest Houses
With its full range of accommodation, Barbados also has many inexpensive places to stay. These are mainly along the South Coast, which has a younger and sometimes livelier atmosphere and is generally cheaper anyway. A lot of the guest houses there are really very simple indeed, but they do offer you a friendly reception often in a busy area. Prices usually start at US$35 per night. There is a cluster of guest houses in Worthing, of which the nicest are probably Maraval, t 435 7437 and the very simple Cleverdale, t 428 3172. Other less expensive independent places are dotted around the island. Despite its name,
Sea-U Guest House Barbados is not really a guest house, but more of an independent hideaway with self-catering suites and apartments. It has a cracking setting in Tent Bay above the Atlantic coast.

It’s worth remembering that as well as the guest houses themselves, some of the cheapest places to stay in Barbados are in fact apartments. These enable you to cater for yourself when you feel like it, though of course there are plenty of places to eat out along the South Coast anyway.

Sailing and Cruising
BARBADOS STAY SAIL & BARBADOS SAILING
There are currently no options for stay/sail holidays on Barbados and there are no yacht charter companies working out of the island. However, there are plenty of yachts and catamarans on which you can take a day sailing trip.
