Dominican Republic / Currency/Credit Cards
The currency of the Dominican Republic is the peso (RD$), which is divided into 100 centavos. At present it stands at US$1 = RD$38.
The US Dollar is accepted only in tourist areas, though you may get your change in pesos. Elsewhere you need pesos. There are exchange offices, or cambios, in the airports and major shopping centres on the island.
Credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, tourist restaurants, travel agents and the car-hire firms but don’t expect to be able to pay with a credit card outside the tourist areas.
Credit card cloning and identity theft are a danger when using cards in shops and restaurants. It is safer to use cash whenever possible.
