Dominican Republic / Telephone

By Fiona Dunlop

Few countries have such excellent mobile coverage as the Dominican Republic. You can be up a mountain, on a remote sandy beach or even on an atoll in the Atlantic, and you still get a signal. Three servers share the trade: Orange (with the lion’s share); Claro (owned by Mexican billionaire, Carlos Slim), and Viva. It is easy to buy a local Sim card, either pay as you go or on a contract, from 100 pesos. All you need is identification and a phone, although they will throw one in for a reasonable amount too.

Internet coverage (3G) is equally extensive and free WiFi widely available in hotels, roadside service areas and restaurants.

GPS is still in its infancy, as much of the island has not yet been charted.
