St Martin/St Maarten / Security
St Martin/St Maarten is a busy holiday island and while generally safe a quick perusal of the local papers makes it clear that crime does occur. It is important to take the standard precautions, such as not wearing precious jewellery or leaving valuable items like cameras on a balcony or in sight in a parked car. Make use of hotel safes and be adequately insured. At night avoid poorly-lit streets in Marigot (St Martin) and Philipsburg (St Maarten).
Always ask before taking photos of local people as not everyone wants to be a star in your holiday snaps. Don't expect cars to stop at pedestrian crossings. Hygiene standards are variable and you will be a very lucky traveller if you don't see a cockroach or two during your visit.
