Trinidad / Airport
Piarco International Airport (airport code POS), t 669 4868, is probably one of the best appointed airports in the Caribbean after large-scale refurbishment and development in 2001 and will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2011. Situated about 16 miles/25km south-east of the capital Port of Spain off the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, an expansive new terminal with attractive departure lounge, arrivals hall, restaurants, duty-free, shops and security have made for a far more amenable all-round travelling experience. Official airport taxis will normally take you anywhere within the city for around US$35, a journey lasting anything from half an hour at off-peak times to two hours in the morning and evening rush hours. There is a 24-hour Cambio just beyond immigration and a First Citizen Bank in arrivals – there are also 4 ATMs. Piarco is also the headquarters for the national airline carrier, Caribbean Airlines.
