St Eustatius / Museums

By Nigel Tisdall

Berkel Family Museum, Lynch Plantation, t 318 4560 - On the east side of St Eustatius, Lynch Plantation is home to a Seventh Day Adventist School and next door a two-house historical museum that shines a light on island life in the last century. Created by Ishmael Berkel and set beside lovingly-tended green lawns, one cottage recreates the small home of his father, who ran a grocery store. Next door is a larger townhouse devoted to his mother, who had 18 children. Family pictures, heirloom furniture, period clothing and old tools ensure they are not forgotten.

Simon Doncker House, Oranjestad Upper Town, t 318 2288 - Home to the St Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum, this two-storey merchant's house dates from the 1750s and illustrates the fine lifestyle some Dutch traders enjoyed during St Eustatius's golden era. The English Admiral George Rodney resided here after he took the island in 1781. The ground floor exhibits cover the colonial period while the basement has archaeological finds. Upstairs the “Granny Statia” room has more recent treasures. A small shop sells guides and historic maps and prints. Closed Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
