St Martin
Fort-Louis, Marigot - Reached by a short, steep climb, the solid ruins of Fort-Louis rest on a headland on the north side of the French capital. The commanding views of the harbour below are as impressive as they must have been when it was constructed in 1789. Information panels explain the function of its buildings and fortifications.
St Maarten
Fort Amsterdam, Little Bay - The poignant ruins of this once-formidable Dutch fort rest on a headland that offers a fine view of Great Bay and which is also home to a colony of brown pelicans. Information panels explain what stood where in a strategic military position dating from 1631. To get there you'll need to walk through the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort. Ask for a permit (free) if parking your car outside the hotel.
