Emily Ashwell
Definitive Caribbean is an unparalleled source of travel information, whose reputation is based on a compelling combination of an expert and passionate team. It is very exciting to be involved with the revamped site and to be part of the team as it enters a new era.
Biography
Emily Ashwell honed her travel industry knowledge by writing for the most critical audience possible – the travel industry itself. As a news and features journalist on Travel Weekly, she wrote and edited the Caribbean features and through this, developed an in-depth knowledge of the region. From hiking through St Lucia’s rainforest to eating jerk chicken at a Jamaican roadside shack, several years and tens of thousands of words later, she counts Antigua as her best-known destination. Achievements include winning best travel trade feature at The Caribbean Travel Writer Awards 2007. More recently Emily has contributed to The Daily Express, ABTA Magazine and Selling Long Haul magazine. She started out on local newspapers at The Bath Chronicle.
My Caribbean favourites
A few of my favourite Caribbean experiences:
We had booked a mountain biking trip through the rainforest in St Lucia. The day came and it was pouring with rain. The trip was cancelled because it was too muddy, so we ditched the bikes and hiked instead. Walking through the forest, we came to Errard Waterfall. The sun came out and we clambered across the shallow river to the waterfall and cooled off.
When my little boy was eight months old we took him to Antigua. Each morning we would bring him into the hotel’s breakfast room and the waitresses would make a beeline for our table, greeting him with big smiles and holding out their arms for a cuddle. Every time he pulled his bottom lip, they would say in their gentlest tone, ‘Ah baby, are your gums red hot’ and he would break into a huge grin.
Nothing beats sipping a cool bottle of Red Stripe whilst watching the sun go down over the Caribbean Sea.
