Biography

Frances and Michael Howorth are Caribbean yachting experts – an award winning team of professional freelance travel writers specialising in coverage of luxury yachts, boutique cruise liners and tropical islands together with ocean side resort hotels and spas.

For six wonderful years the warm blue waters were both home and cruising ground where they learned to love every anchorage in intimate detail. Now as freelance travel writers their work is seen in top yachting magazines and daily newspapers including the Financial Times.

Frances is an award winning photographer whose work always accompanies their writing and frequently appears independently in other publications, calendars, postcards and posters. Photographs taken by Frances have featured on the covers of many quality periodicals. Michael is a qualified Captain certificated to command large yachts up to 3000 tons. Both are members of the British Guild of Travel Writers and the Travel Writers Alliance. The couple have written several books mostly about yachts, yachting and survival at sea. Travelling together for the last thirty years, their voyages of discovery have taken them around the world but for six very happy years they lived on their yacht in the Caribbean learning to love and understand the very special nuances that the occasional visitor might otherwise miss.

My Caribbean favourites

A few of my favourite Caribbean experiences:

No one among our crew will ever forget first sighting St Lucia. She loomed on the horizon some sixteen days after we had set sail for the Caribbean from the Canary Islands. Arriving to a rapturous welcome after a trans-Atlantic crossing was momentous and the memory of the warmth of that greeting will remain with us always. While thousands of sailors must arrive in the islands each year, the locals seem to greet each with such affection that one is immediately smitten.

We love the simple pleasures of the British Virgin Islands, the sophistication of Anguilla, parties in Antigua, the bio-diversity of Dominica and the chic found in the French islands. St Lucia is where we rekindled our love with the underwater world of scuba diving and the Grenadines was were we learned to lime! (Go on, look it up!). Grenada taught us respect and Tobago how to fish and we have learned that until you play carnival mas in Trinidad you have simply not fully visited the Caribbean.
