Definitive Caribbean gives writers like me who are passionate about the Caribbean unbelievable scope to investigate these wonderful islands in detail. Few other guides take the trouble to look at specialist areas such as the arts and theatre or genres of travel such as families. It’s a pleasure to be involved with DC at this exciting moment in its evolution as it reinvents itself as the most authoritative website about the Caribbean.quote_close

My Caribbean favourites

A few of my favourite Caribbean experiences:

The Cayman Islands were a revelation to me when I visited them over 15 years ago. As I landed on the tiny airstrip at Little Cayman I couldn’t believe the Caribbean could be so castaway. I learnt to dive on Cayman Brac and saw a shark on my very first certified dive. I recently returned with my two children and was able to show them some of the wonderful nature on these islands from stingrays to baby turtles.

St Barths is one of my favourite islands. It’s true that it has incredible sophistication but at the same time it’s a tiny community of people who are so proud of their precious island. If you want to be pampered, come here. I had one of the most bizarre and wonderful massages of my life in the little spa cottage at Le Toiny where the therapist used smooth shells filled with hot oil during the treatment.

The Bahamas is another favourite of mine. I was sent there on a honeymoon assignment about 10 years ago and discovered that there was another world beyond Nassau and Paradise Island. I stayed on Harbour Island with its chichi boutiques and hotels before heading over to the wildly contrasting Eluthera with its deserted surf beaches. Whoever says the Caribbean isn’t an adventure is mistaken. You just need to know where to look.
