Nigel Tisdall

Too many people see the Caribbean as little more than a sun-drenched holiday-land of palm-fringed beaches, endless reggae and luridly-coloured cocktails. Thankfully at Definitive Caribbean they think otherwise, and I'm pleased to be part of a hard-working team of experts who are determined to create a thorough and independent guide to a region of immense diversity and character.quote_close

My Caribbean favourites

A few of my favourite Caribbean experiences:

I love how wherever you go on in the Caribbean there is always music – even on the LIAT airport bus. One day I flew into Antigua and the driver was playing 'Return to Sender' at full volume, and everyone on board was smiling and jigging away as if Carnival had come early.

Diving into that warm and impossibly blue sea after a long, hot morning's hike. Try climbing the peak 3,232-foot peak that crowns Nevis - it's a right old slog where you have to haul yourself up the mountainside with ropes on an adventurous staircase of roots and boulders, and the best thing is you get gloriously muddy...

While having breakfast at the ultra-hip new Viceroy resort in Anguilla, I decide to order some brown toast. Some time later a waiter returns with a plate and an apology. “I'm very sorry, sir” he says. “We only have white bread - but I've cooked it really well.”
