About Stephen Thorpe Photography

Currently living on Dartmoor in South West England, Stephen Thorpe has spent half a lifetime working and living in the Caribbean, initially as a planning consultant in resort development in Barbados and Jamaica then latterly as a freelance writer regionwide.

My Caribbean favourites

A few of my favourite Caribbean experiences:

Having dabbled in photography in Barbados, I began to take it seriously whilst resident in Jamaica where the mesmeric landscapes and singular culture were an instant inspiration. Wildlife, cricket, portraiture, landscape, culture and anything non-touristy are my main areas of interest, and I currently use a Nikon D90 which is both robust and versatile.

Late afternoon usually provides optimum light conditions in the Caribbean and it's advisable to use a UV filter; always carry a spare lens cap too - simplistic advice maybe - but after working a lot in rugged mountain and forest locations, I know to my cost you're guaranteed to lose one at some stage.

As a photographer you're always behind the camera - and years can pass before you suddenly realise you've no personal pictures - the one attached here was taken on the Volzberg near the Suriname-Brazil border in Northern Amazonia by an unknown Indian guide. Apologies.quote_close
