Investing in property in St Martin/St Maarten is big business – particularly on the Dutch side where development continues at a great pace. The island has many timeshare resorts as well as an exclusive residential area in the west, Les Terres Basses, that is home to heavily-protected multimillion-dollar villas and estates.

Many visitors come here first on holiday and are then drawn to buying a place in the sun because of the good flight connections, sailing opportunities and international atmosphere. High class marinas, casinos, fine restaurants and 36 beaches add to the appeal. Bear in mind that there are different rules governing ownership and taxation of property on each side of the island, for example on St Maarten there is no capital gains tax or annual property tax.
