Anguilla / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

The tiny upmarket island of Anguilla is largely off the beaten track where cruises are concerned as it doesn’t have the port facilities to accommodate many ships. Those that do stop are smaller, carrying a few hundred passengers at most, but the feeling of exclusivity ties in with an island that is known for its beautiful powder sand beaches, luxurious hotels, lush villas and some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. With friendly locals and an unhurried pace of life, the emphasis is on chilling out as there isn’t much else to do or see.

Cruise ships moor off-shore and ferry people in tenders (small boats) to points such as Sandy Ground or Road Bay. A short distance from here is the main town, The Valley - a quiet enclave with a few government buildings, churches, the Anguilla National Trust Museum and Wallblake House, the island’s only remaining plantation house. Visitors wanting to go further afield can visit the Heritage Collection Museum at East End which gives a good insight into the island’s past.

Local companies offering tours include Malliouhanna Travel and Tours.
