Anguilla / Special Interests / Golf

By Peter Ellegard

There is currently one golf course on Anguilla, the Greg Norman-designed Temenos Golf Club, although another project for a Jack Nicklaus course is once again under way after the original development it formed part of was shelved.

Temenos Golf Club - Reopened in December 2009 having originally opened in 2006 at a cost of $50 million. A 7063-yard, 18-hole championship golf course situated towards the western end of the island and surrounded by the spectacular villas of Temenos estates, it has some lovely panoramic views across the Caribbean to nearby St Maarten. The course features dramatic elevation changes and was designed to preserve and enhance the island’s natural environment, most notably the landmark Merrywing Salt Pond. Water comes into play on 13 holes, with a saltmarsh winding through eight of them.

The course forms part of the Cap Juluca resort, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Facilities include a natural turf driving range, practice bunkers and a practice putting green.

The Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Anguilla is being built as part of the Jumeirah Anguilla Resort project, on a 370-acre beachfront site in the south of the island. It will feature several holes playing alongside the water. The course was originally due to open in 2010 as the Fairmont Anguilla development, abandoned because of the recession. The Jumeirah resort is due to open by 2014.
