It was in Antigua during 1949 that Caribbean yacht charters began. Commander VEB Nicholson, fresh from war weary Europe found Nelson’s former dockyard wonderfully secluded and lurking amid mangrove swamps. There he carved out his home and business. Now English and neighbouring Falmouth Harbours are busy centres of yachting, both offering calm anchorages. Antigua’s central location and international airport ensure many crewed charter yachts are based here. Cruise around Antigua then head to peaceful Barbuda. Go south for the mountains and mangroves of Guadeloupe, Dominica and St Lucia. Point the bow northwards for the fashionably, chic St Barths, Anguilla and Sint Maarten. Turn to the west for islands whose peaks brush the clouds: Montserrat, Statia, St Kitts, Nevis and Saba.
