Antigua and Barbuda / Special Interests / Cricket

By Stephen Thorpe

A backwater of the regional game until it staged its first test match against England in 1981, it has become a favoured destination for both watching and playing cricket with an excellent range of hotels and tremendous beach life. Vivian Richards and Andy Roberts, the fisherman turned fast bowler, paved the way in raising Antigua’s international profile which was augmented later by Richie Richardson and CurtlyAmbrose. The atmospheric old Recreation Ground, twice the scene of Brian Lara’s record breaking individual Test scores, has been supplanted by the 20,000 capacity Sir Vivian Richards Stadium built outside the capital at North Sound, while the splendid Stanford Cricket Ground alongside the airport is being overseen by the Government in lieu of the discredited former financier Allen Stanford’s arraignment in the US. Richardson, a former West Indies captain  like  Richards, has set up the island’s first Cricket Academy which invites aspiring cricketers from schools and clubs in the UK and beyond for specialist all inclusive coaching sessions of 10-14 days duration. Top class hospitality and entertainment is also assured, see Richie Richardson's Cricket Academy website for full details.
