Barbados / Special Interests / Cricket

By Stephen Thorpe

No comparable area in the world can match “Little England’s” in the production of great test cricketers over the years, Sir Garfield Sobers pre-eminent among them, and the superbly redeveloped headquarters at Kensington justifiably retains its title as the mecca of West Indies cricket, hosting 28,000 for the World Cup Final in 2007. There are several other well appointed venues in Bridgetown and beyond, with the country grounds at Crab Hill in St.Lucy and Windward especially appealing. Barbados was the forerunner in sports tourism after Fred Rumsey’s legendary annual pro-am cricket events every November set the tone for affordable overseas sport and leisure. Indeed it’s sometimes hard to find an amateur cricketer in England who hasn’t sampled the delights of Bim at one time or another, such is its enduring lure. Still popular for Legends tournaments and club and schoolboy tours and a host of other diversions, it now has the added benefit of the West Indies Cricket Board’s High Performance Centre at the Three Ws Oval, Cave Hill.
