British Virgin Islands / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

Like precious jewels scattered across an azure sea, the British Virgin Islands were made for cruising. This is desert island territory with small settlements, atmospheric bars and beautiful beaches. The tropical archipelago is big on natural attractions, from the unique Baths at Virgin Gorda, a curious formation of huge boulders with caves and rock pools, to the curious flocks of pink flamingos on Anegada.

Other points of interest include Cane Garden Bay on the main island of Tortola where most cruise passengers go for beach time or Gorda Peak on Virgin Gorda if they want to admire the stunning views across the islands. The waters around the islands are ripe for sailing along with diving and snorkelling, with underwater caves and shipwrecks.

Larger cruise ships dock at the main island Tortola, which has the most developed tourist infrastructure with a scattering of shops, restaurants and bars in the capital Road Town, about a 10-minute walk away. Local taxi drivers gather at the port to offer island tours. Smaller ships dock either at nearby Virgin Gorda or sleepier islands such as Jost Van Dyke and Anegada where the emphasis is on enjoying the natural surroundings.
