Caribbean Eco/Nature

The natural world is all pervasive in the Caribbean, a dramatic seascape or mountain backdrop never far away. High forest, rolling hills, river valleys, a myriad beaches adorn the islands and, though mammalian fauna is rather sparse, flora in certain countries is super abundant in both range and variety. And then there are a few truly wonderful experiences. The Phosphorescent Lake in Vieques, Puerto Rico is one of the most awe-inspiring natural phenomena in the world.

Bird species in the Caribbean basin number around 560 excluding Trinidad which, as a separate entity of South American antecedence, has an astonishing 430 alone.

Dominica in the Windward Islands is a leading player in sustainable tourism, nurturing its “Nature Isle“ ethos on numerous fronts, promoting culinary and botanical awareness, environmental conservation and renewable energy in harness with nature.

Fish stocks may be depleted in some areas but marine life is always astounding to the landlubber and there are exceptional world class dive sites in the Eastern Caribbean, several off the west coast of Dominica where deep waters close to shore also harbour resident whales and dolphins.

Endangered species abound, like the manatee or sea cow, the slow moving denizen of estuaries and coast, the parrots of  St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Dominica and Grenada, ocelot in Trinidad, and the trio of turtles - giant leatherback, hawksbill and green - which nest on remote beaches throughout the region. All the above are subject to concerted conservation initiatives and community educational programmes in a bid to preserve a rich natural heritage for future generations.

Generally there are well trained guides on the islands who will take you for a hike in the rainforest. They bring the whole place alive with stories about the different animals and plants, their origins and local medicinal and other uses. Beware unofficial guides - always book through your hotel, travel organisers, or local organisers - the guides recommended on Definitive Caribbean are well-researched.
