Travelling alone to enrich the soul and empower the mind...
Caribbean Solo Travel
The Caribbean is generally thought of as a couple’s destination. So much so that some hotels have been known to charge a ‘single supplement’ for a room that they would prefer to sell as a double. This is not universal, though, and in fact there are now a few hotels that cater specifically for single travellers.
The Caribbean is not generally an uncomfortable place as a single traveller, either as a man or a woman. If your aim is to hide yourself away in a nice setting or to pursue a particular interest, then the Caribbean has always had many small and personable inns with friendly staff that will welcome you and look after you extremely well. It is usually perfectly acceptable to wander into a bar or beach bar alone and it will be fine. And in restaurants and dining room they won’t put you in the corner behind a pillar if asked. Finally, there is usually no problem joining in on many of the communal activities, such as yacht cruises and excursions, or walks into the rainforest.
Only a few hotels are especially designed to cater for solo travellers. There is no standardisation across the region of course, but some offer programmes for people to join to keep them busy, and at dinner there may be communal tables where you can sit, even 'companions’ to keep you company.
If you are looking for a place just 'to be' and to be left alone with your book or your paints, there are plenty of places that will enrich your soul and restore your body. The people of the Caribbean are ever welcoming and friendly, so travelling alone is likely to be an empowering experience and a great way to integrate yourself in Caribbean life if you wish.
For the best places, choose an island and read our guide for single travel.
