Cayman Islands / Special Interests
The three islands that make up Cayman have distinctive characters. If they are to be singled out for any particular activity then scuba diving has to come at the top of the list. Due to their low-lying nature and a lack of rivers the waters around Cayman have some of the clearest visibility in the world. Ideal for learners, the dive sites are generally not subject to strong currents and there are enough shallow sites to give beginners a sense of confidence in their early dives. In addition the reefs and deep drop offs that characterise Cayman wall-diving are famous for being some of the healthiest reefs in the entire Caribbean.
While not a major golfing destination there are two 18-hole courses and one challenging 9-hole course at the Ritz Carlton Resort.
Cayman is not an inexpensive destination and holidaymakers here expect a generally high standard in accommodation and infrastructure. This high standard also translates into a significant degree of cultural activity and a wide selection of restaurants and dining styles. Nature lovers will find that the island vegetation attracts a good variety of birdlife, and the endemic population of iguanas on all three islands is another attraction. Cayman boasts the largest moth in the world (the Atlas moth) and the smallest butterfly in the Western hemisphere (possibly the world) – the Cayman pygmy blue. A highlight of any trip should be a tour of the QE II Botanic Park. Where there is ample opportunity to learn something about endemic and regional plants and flowers and their uses.
There are various island festivals throughout the year including a ‘Mardi Gras’.
