Cayman Islands / Special Interests / Flowers & Gardens

By Tim Ecott

Visitors to Grand Cayman should make a point of visiting the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park about forty minutes drive east of George Town. There is a magnificent Palm Garden featuring almost two hundred different species including the three native varieties, the silver thatch, the bull thatch and the Cuban royal palm. There is also a woodland trail which is planted with a large number of Cayman’s native flora and an orchid trail as well as a traditional ‘sand garden’ and areas showing medicinal plants and traditional edible fruits.

In George Town the Camana Way (on the approach road to Camana Bay development) has recreated key floral habitats representing the island’s natural habitats including Coastal Strand, Sandy woodland. Limestone Woodland. Mosit Woodland and Seasonally Flooded areas. These delightful walkways are planted with trees and palms, shrubs and herbaceous plants and a selection of vines, grasses and ground covering species. You will find labelled examples of sea grape, silver thatch, beach elder, wild cinnamon, scorpion’s tail and other locally recognisable specimens.

Grand Cayman possesses the two-mile long ‘Mastic Trail’, a marked path through mangrove wetlands and a large area of ancient dry forest. Wild banana orchids (Cayman’s national flower) can be found along the trail. Guided tours are available.
