Known as the “Nature Isle” Dominica is a more rustic stop on cruising itineraries, with its natural attractions and untouched beauty. The rain-forested mountainous landscape lays claim to volcanoes, waterfalls and a boiling lake, along with the Caribbean’s only remaining tribe of Carib Indians, the original settlers of the region. It is a prime place for hikers and walkers, while the exceptional birdlife makes the island ideal bird-spotting territory. Dominica’s eco-attractions also extend offshore with world-class diving and marine-life, lending itself to whale and dolphin-watching trips.

The capital, Roseau, is a sleepy, compact town that is easy to explore on foot. This is where most cruise ships moor, either at the cruise ship berth from where passengers walk ashore into Roseau, or anchor in the bay and transfer passengers ashore by tender (small boats). Some ships also dock at Portsmouth in the north of the island. From here, passengers disappear off on various exploration trips or they can enjoy some of Dominica’s few golden sandy beaches, which are nearby. Taxis line up at from both points, offering tours of the island. Car rental is also available and local tour companies include KHATTS (Ken’s Hinterland Adventure Tours and Travel Service).
