Dominica is not a recognised yachting centre owing mainly to its rugged coastline and limited shelter. Most sailboat traffic flits between Martinique and Guadeloupe skirting the west coast, spellbound like Columbus and his crew at the mountainous backdrop. Prince Rupert Bay, in the north-west at Portsmouth, is a popular anchorage, not least for the presence of the Purple Turtle restaurant onshore. Further south, the Picard Beach Cottages have a decent jetty and bar.
Yacht Services
The Dominica Marine Center, Roseau – This has a 20ftx20ft dock; moorings for 100 boats up to 40ft with 17ft depth; a full chandlery; information and charter operations. They also conduct whale and dolphin watching trips on wide-span catamarans, plus full-day offshore and half-day inshore fishing charters.
