Grenada & Carriacou / Special Interests / Beach
Grenada has a mixture of white, yellow and dark sand beaches – all of which are public. Carriacou has white sand only. Starting with the 2-mile white sands of Grand Anse and moving east and north the sand goes from a lovely golden colour at La Sagesse to a darker colour along the east coast at Grenville, Antoine Bay and Bathway Beach, curving round Sauteurs Bay, down past Gouyave Bay and getting lighter again past grand Mal Bay and into St George’s. Locals and visitors mingle happily along Dr Groom’s while at Grand Anse, Grenadians head down to the surf after work and to Cabier for family picnics. There is beach cricket aplenty at sunset and weekends at Morne Rouge.
Grand Anse on Grenada is a two-mile long stretch along which some of the island's main hotel are located including Spice Island Beach Resort, Mount Cinnamon and the Coyaba. Just behind the Grand Anse, the Flamboyant Hotel sits on the hillside with wonderful views across the beach and bay to St George’s and has a restaurant and Dive Grenada sitting at its feet at the end of Grand Anse beach. Lanse aux Epines bay and beach is the location for a small cottage complex of the same name and The Calabash as well as a few villas set back from the beach.
Morne Rouge Bay is one of the best places to see the sunset - a calm bay, soft sand and a beach partly shaded by tropical trees. It is served by Sur La Mer bar/restaurant and there is a nightclub and the inexpensive Gem Beach Resort behind the beach with the newer Kalinago Beach Resort further along. Nearby, is Portici Beach, home to Laluna. Further round and closer to the airport, Aquarium Beach (officially known as Magazine Beach) is a great favourite for its excellent restaurant and the Maca Bana Villa resort while next door, Pink Gin Beach is were you will find the all-inclusive LaSource.
Another notable villa beach resort is True Blue Bay Resort, albeit with a man-made beach. There is an excellent waterfront restaurant and the bay is home for Horizon Yacht Charters and a dive operator.
There are no notable beach resorts as such on Carriacou but Paradise Beach is idyllic and there are villas tucked into the hillsides behind some of the coves and beaches of this very laid back and enchanting little island.
