Grenada & Carriacou / Special Interests / Cricket

By Stephen Thorpe

Although lacking a significant cricketing pedigree, Grenada has produced a few international cricketers in Rawl Lewis, wicketkeeper Junior Murray, Devon Smith and latterly Andre Fletcher from La Tante; overall it  makes for a good touring destination with excellent facilities at the Queens Park Sports Complex and Stadium near St.Georges and newly improved outgrounds  islandwide like Tanteen and Prospect Park.

The Grenada Classics tournament featuring an annual England-West Indies veterans  bash has sadly ceased but Queens Park is a fixture on the calendar for one day internationals and Tests. It’s status is all the more remarkable considering the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ivan and the dedicated rebuilding work since. Good practice facilities are also available at St.Georges University of Medecine in a great coastal setting outside the capital. The prime stretch of sand at Grande Anse can often provide the best conditions for serious beach cricket too—compacted sand lapped by the odd wash of gentle surf, and a hard, skimming tennis ball. Who needs a bowling machine? Group travel specialists Smile-Caribbean can organise bespoke cricket tours to suit all standards.
