Grenada & Carriacou / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

Grenada is a delightful cruise stop. The “Spice Island” – so-called because of the rich range of spices grown on its fertile landscape – is famous for its beautiful beaches and lush rainforests. Visitors can see the best of these on island tours to waterfalls, gardens, plantations and fascinating nutmeg processing factories and cocoa estates.

Grenada’s capital, St George’s, is hailed as one of the prettiest towns in the Caribbean. It is pleasant to explore, with shops, restaurants, historic churches and the interesting Grenada National Museum, while just outside the city sit a number of forts that played a key role in the island’s history.

Cruise ships moor at St George’s, with larger vessels docking at the Melville Street Cruise Terminal on the north side of the capital and smaller vessels berthing near the Carenage area with its shops and restaurants. There are plenty of taxis by the port and in St George’s, offering island tours for around $25 an hour. Visitors wanting to chill can head for the island’s most famous beach, Grande Anse, a 10-minute ride away by taxi, though there are water taxis from the Carenage. Tours can be organised through local company Caribbean Horizons.

Some smaller ships stop at Grenada’s sister island Carriacou where the emphasis is on natural attractions with beautiful beaches and good diving. Ships dock at the capital, Hillsborough, which has botanical gardens and a museum.
