Guadeloupe / Special Interests
You can spot the French island of Guadeloupe on a map by its striking butterfly shape. Two islands, Grande-Terre (full of rolling hills and sugar plantations) and Basse-Terre (a rugged mountainous island dominated by the 1,444m volcano, La Soufrière) are linked by a drawbridge over the Rivière Salée. Special interests include experiencing the French Caribbean culture, museums and plantation houses, rainforest exploration and hiking, sugar/rum factories and casinos. Sailing is good here especially around off-shore islands.
