Jamaica / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

As the third-largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica certainly isn’t short of attractions or activities for cruise visitors. This is an island known for its reggae musical heritage, the untamed beauty of the Blue Mountains, and the expansive white-sand beaches of Negril.

Most attractions are clustered around the north coast resorts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, where cruise ships generally dock, and the towns are a 10 or 20-minute walk away. From either point, visitors can go horse-riding in the sea, swoop through the rainforest on a zipwire or enjoy gentle rafting trips along the rivers. Jamaica’s most famous attractions include Dunn’s River Falls (which are great fun to climb); Great Houses dating from colonial times such as Rose Hall; Firefly, the former home of celebrated playwright Noel Coward; and Bob Marley’s birthplace at the village of Nine Mile. There’s plenty of tourist shopping in both towns, while tours are offered by  taxis and tour buses that line-up at both ports. Those with JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travellers’ Association) and PP licence plates are recommended.

The historic Georgian town of Falmouth near Montego Bay has recently been developed as another cruise port, while in the east the sleepy, and stunning, enclave of Port Antonio is a cruise stop for smaller vessels.
