Martinique / Special Interests

By Jane Anderson

Martinique (81x31km) is truly France in the tropics with Gauloise cigarettes and gendarmes directing traffic. Mountainous rain forest interiors give way to fabulous coves and beaches on both its Caribbean and Atlantic coasts. Martinique’s largest town Fort-de-France is a heady mixture of New Orleans and the French Riviera with its iron-grille-work balconies heavy with flowers. Come here if you want to experience the real French Caribbean life with zouk music, Creole and French cuisine, great beaches (some white sand, some black), museums, plantations, botanical gardens, rainforest and hiking, mountain biking, sailing and casinos.
