The tear-shaped isle of Montserrat is a captivating stop for cruise ships. Long famous for its Irish heritage, that led to it being dubbed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, in recent years it has been famous for its volcanic activity. The smouldering Soufriere Hills volcano, which has rendered two-thirds of the island uninhabitable, is now the island’s most unique attraction.

Montserrat’s former capital Plymouth has become a modern-day Pompeii that makes compulsive viewing from one of the safe observation points. Another fascinating stop is the Montserrat Volcano Observatory which also has good views into the Exclusion Zone. These are covered on island tours, which also visit the Montserrat Cultural Centre, an old French fort and the Montserrat National Trust. Visitors can also explore the lush north of the island, noted for its hiking trails and birdlife, or take boat trips for a different view of the destruction wrought by the ash and pyroclastic flows from the volcano.

The island does not have the facilities to cope with larger vessels, attracting only smaller ships that moor in the harbour at Little Bay and take passengers ashore by tender (small boat). However, port facilities are being built in Little Bay, where the island’s new capital will be located.
