Nevis / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

Nevis is the smaller, lesser-known sister island of St Kitts, with a distinct traditional ambience said to be more reminiscent of the Caribbean 50 years ago. The absence of an airport with the capacity for larger aircraft has kept it off the main tourist trail, making it a perfect destination to discover by cruise ship. It is less developed than other islands with historic churches, picturesque plantation house hotels, and lush tropical scenery best seen on island tours. It was also the setting for the wedding of a certain young Horatio Nelson to the young Fanny Nisbet, who he met when she was living on the island, and a plaque now marks the spot where they tied the knot.

The charming capital, Charlestown, is said to be among the most picturesque in the Caribbean with its classic West Indian buildings that line the streets and main square. It is generally here that cruise passengers come ashore as the smaller cruise ships that Nevis attracts moor in the harbour and send passengers ashore by tender (small boat). Points of interest in the capital include the Museum of Nevis History and the birthplace of US statesman Alexander Hamilton. Taxis line up along the main street offering island tours. Attractions outside the capital include the Nevis Botanical Gardens, while popular Pinney’s Beach is a 10-minute walk away.
