Nevis / Special Interests / Museums
For such a small and sleepy island, Nevis has a surprising amount of memorabilia that justifies its two museums. While one focuses on the general history of the island, dating from Amerindian times and detailing the life of American constitutionalist Alexander Hamilton, who was born on Nevis; the other is devoted to the life of Horatio Nelson who was based in the West Indies as a young man and married a Nevisian on the island.
Museum of Nevis History, Alexander Hamilton House, Charlestown - A well presented look at the history of Nevis, from Amerindian times to the present day, taking in Arawak pottery and pieces from Nevis’s wealthy colonial period, including details of the life of Alexander Hamilton himself. Upstairs is the Nevis House of Assembly, where the five-person Nevis Assembly meets four times a year.
Horatio Nelson Museum, Belle Vue - Excellent museum which tells the story of Nelson’s life and the times in the 1780s when he was based in the West Indies, stationed in English Harbour in Antigua. Lots of Nelson memorabilia, letters, models of ships of the age, including the dinner service used at his wedding to Nevisian Fanny Nesbit.
