Saba / Special Interests / Birdwatching
Saba's lack of development, well-kept hiking trails, absence of predators, and wide variety of habitats make it a rewarding destination for bird-lovers. Over 80 species have been recorded and the island is a valuable nesting site for Saba's national bird – the Audubon's shearwater – and also for the endangered red-billed tropicbird. Keep an eye out for the red-tailed hawk and American kestrel flying high above, while the cloud forest on Mount Scenery is an inviting habitat for purple-throated and trembler hummingbirds. The cliffs are home to sea-birds including the brown noddy, sooty tern and bridled tern. Other noteworthy species include the bridled quail dove, purple-throated carib and scaly-breasted thrasher. Contact the tourist office or Saba Conservation Foundation for more information.
