Saba / Special Interests / Carnivals & Festivals
Saba's holiday calendar reflects its history and cultural ties. The leading religion is Roman Catholicism and so Christian holidays such as Easter, Ascension Day and Christmas are observed. In addition, links with the Netherlands are celebrated with an annual holiday on 30 April to commemorate the official birthday and coronation of Queen Beatrix. Labour Day (1 May) is also a public holiday.
For many Sabans the big party moment is the summer Carnival held during the last week of July. Then the hotels are filled with visitors and returning islanders, and everyone dresses up in colourful costumes with outlandish head-dresses for a noisy parade of dancing and banner waving. Steel bands, rum punches and stalls selling street food add to the festive atmosphere.
Another important annual event is Sea and Learn, an educational programme that runs thoughout October in which naturalists, scientists, academics and marine experts visit Saba to make presentations on environmental issues. Specialist subjects can range from sharks and sponges to earthquakes and orchids. Admission is free, and associated activities include walks, dives and field trips.
Finally, there is Saba Day, which takes place over a weekend in early December and includes an official government reception in honour of the island along with sports competitions, barbecues, dance contests and island-wide fun and games.
