Saba / Special Interests / Cruise

By Sara Macefield

This is a mountainous speck of an island with no beaches or lowlands – and virtually no tourists! It is the smallest of the Dutch Antilles - literally the top of an extinct submerged volcano with steeply rising slopes and just one road, called The Road and a capital called The Bottom. But it is traditional, sleepy Caribbean at its best and that is the crux of its charm. It is the perfect place for soaking up the quiet, unspoilt atmosphere, and it is also known for good hiking, with trails across the slopes of Mount Scenery (the highest point in the Dutch islands) and diving, with nearly 30 dive sites in the Saba Marine Park.

Not surprisingly, the island is quick and easy to get around on a tour. Points of interest include its four villages – Winwardside, The Bottom, Hell’s Gate and St Johns - with their pretty gingerbread houses and friendly islanders selling crafts such as lace, paintings and wood carvings. Other sights include the airport, which boasts the world’s shortest commercial runway which, at 400 metres, has been compared to an aircraft carrier; and Wandering Beach, Saba’s only stretch of (black) sand, which appears from spring to winter. Not surprisingly, the island attracts smaller cruise ships which call at Fort Bay Harbour.
