Saba / Special Interests / Eco/Nature
Saba is a place where you feel close to nature. Its self-appointed title of “The Unspoiled Queen”, which is displayed on the number-plate of every vehicle, is not just a marketing exercise. Much of the island still has a wild and bountiful atmosphere with plants and trees bursting with life – a scene that is just as impressive when you explore the vivid underwater world surrounding it. Its cliffs are an important breeding site for seabirds and even though the seashore is rocky sea turtles choose to nest here. The island is home to an endemic tree lizard, the Saban anole, that has provoked interest from biologists studying malaria. Fortunately much of this natural heritage is now protected by the parks on land and sea that are administered by the Saba Conservation Foundation, and getting close to it is made easy thanks to excellent walking trails and a wealth of dive sites that can only be accessed by using licensed operators.
