Saba / Special Interests / Family
With no sandy beaches, steep terrain and few attractions, Saba would seem an unappealing place to take children – particularly if you also consider the ferry crossing (which can be rough) or short flight over (with one of the scariest landings in the world). The island does attract the more adventurous and independent-minded family, though, who enjoy walking in its forests, having picnics by the sea and savouring its piratical atmosphere. One option is to combine a few nights here with some on St Martin/St Marteen, which has plenty of beaches and family activities to offer. Bear in mind that not all hotels accept children (such as Shearwater Resort where guests must be 12 and above). A better option, perhaps, is to rent a cottage or villa which means you can have more space and be free to prepare your own meals. Toys can be bought at El Momo Folk Art in Windwardside, where there is also a rudimentary playground beside the Howard L. Johnson museum.
