Saba / Special Interests / Flowers & Gardens

By Nigel Tisdall

Saba is an island bursting with flowers. Its residents maintain attractive gardens outside their homes and the countryside is rich with radiant blooms. There are no botanical gardens to visit, although there are plans to create a “BioPark” in the centre of Windwardside that will celebrate Saba's vivid flora. In the meantime, plants that are hard to miss include the yellow, daisy-like black-eyed Susan - which is Saba's national flower - allamanda, hibiscus, oleander and fruit trees such as mango, banana and guava. The island is home to several species of wild orchid, and if you walk its forest trails you will find magnificent clusters of tree ferns, mountain palms, giant elephant ear and mahogany trees.
