St Barthélemy / Special Interests / Archaeology

By Sara Macefield

In common with most other islands in the region, St Barths’ first settlers were Amerindians – the Ciboneys, followed by the Arawaks and then the Caribs who successfully repelled attempts by Europeans to settle the islands until the mid-1600s when a group of French mariners from Normandy and Brittany arrived. However, there is little trace of the island’s early inhabitants save for a few artefacts in the municipal museum.
