St Eustatius / Special Interests / Birdwatching
St Eustatius's lack of development, numerous hiking trails, absence of predators, and mixed habitats ensures there is much of interest for bird-lovers. Over 50 species have been recorded including the endangered red-billed tropicbird. A popular place for birdwatching is the Quill, where hikers might spot the purple-throated carib, red-necked pigeon and possibly the bridled quail dove. In the southeast of the island, the Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden has a bird observation trail where you can look out for commonly-seen species such as the Antillean crested hummingbird, green-throated carib and bananaquit over a 30-minute walk.
