The pretty island of St Kitts is a popular cruise stop and, with its green hills, dormant volcanoes and abandoned sugar mills that dot the lush landscape, you can see why. Smaller and less developed than some of its larger neighbours, the main tourist hub is Frigate Bay with its golf course and tourist hotels lining the attractive sandy beach. But it’s the landscape that is this island’s biggest draw and its romantic plantation house hotels, tucked away on former sugar estates.

One of the best ways to soak up the views is on the St Kitts Scenic Railway, the first of its kind in the Caribbean, which winds its way across the island, following the original railroad that delivered sugar cane to the working mills. Another popular excursion is Brimstone Hill Fortress, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean, which was built by slaves in the 17th century when the island was ruled by Britain. Other sites include the petroglyphs, Carib Indian carvings on rocks close to the Wingfield Manor Estate, and Fairview Great House.

Cruise ships dock at the capital Basseterre,  with its attractive stone buildings and tourist shops. Taxi drivers crowd around the port entrance offering island tours. These can also be booked with local company Kantours Vacation & Tour Consultants.
