St Lucia / Special Interests / Cricket

By Stephen Thorpe

Another country which has expanded its sports tourism product markedly after construction of a purpose built cricket ground at Beausejour two miles inland from bustling Rodney Bay on the north west coast. Sited amid rolling hills in a supposedly dry micro climate, Beausejour literally means “fine resting place” in French—and it is. First rate facilities, which are also used by the highly successful local women cricketers, in a ground Brian Lara calls “possibly the best in the Caribbean” have made it attractive for pre-season training for county and club teams and England were based here for the first leg of the World Cup. St.Lucia is also currently basking in the reflected glory of having one of their own sons of the soil appointed as West Indies captain, with Darren Sammy the first ever Windward islander to gain the accolade. It’s a tough role and we wish him well.
