St Lucia / Special Interests / Cruise
The tropical isle of St Lucia offers cruise passengers a contrast between the golden sand beaches and lively resorts of the north or the iconic lush scenery of the south. Cruise ships call at ports on either side, which give a different flavour of the country.
In the south are St Lucia’s famous twin Pitons; and the areas is where visitors can explore the world’s only drive-in volcano; bathe in the mineral rich waters of the famous Diamond Falls and hike through the rainforest. In the north is the capital Castries, the lively resort of Rodney Bay with its cluster of shops and restaurants; the sweeping arc of the adjacent white-sand Reduit Beach – one of best known on St Lucia – and the historic beauty spot Pigeon Island.
Larger cruise ships dock at Castries, where passengers can make the most of the duty-free shopping; take a boat trip around the island or jungle tours to see fruit and cocoa plantations. They can get a better view on a canopy tour or ride through the tree-tops on the Aerial Tram. It’s easy enough to visit both parts of the island, though progress can be slow on the windy roads leading south through the rainforest. Some smaller cruise ships dock at Pigeon Island or in the southern part of St Lucia at the town of Soufriere or Marigot Bay. Taxi drivers offer island tours, or these can be booked through local company Sunlink Tours.
