St Martin/St Maarten / Special Interests / Flowers & Gardens

By Nigel Tisdall

St Martin/St Maarten doesn't have any botanical gardens to visit but its flora does reflect the colourful and varied nature of the region. Palms, sea grape and casuarina trees are found along its shoreline and mangroves fringe its salt ponds and lagoons. Cacti and agaves can be seen in the drier parts inland while on higher wooded slopes there are orchids, ferns, elephant ear and white cedar trees. The island's national flower is the lantana, also known as yellow sage, a bushy shrub which has a bright orange and yellow flower.
